3rd dimension

This Is Where I Upload Evidence Of My 3rd Dimension Work.

Task One

Develop Skills in Maya

THIS TASK STARTS IN WEEK ONE!

What you have to do:

Carlie will be delivering weekly workshops in Maya, the immensely powerful 3D modelling and animation platform used by the VFX and animation industries.

You will document your progress in Maya EVERY WEEK during the first part of term, so that when this '3rd Dimension project begins in earnest, you will have substantial evidence of your developing skills.

How you'll be assessed:

Your online posts will be peer and tutor reviewed and assessed as an ongoing process.

Task Two

Task Three

Research the use of technology in film and TV storylines, in terms of social issues.

What you have to do:

1. Use primary and secondary research to explore how films and TV have represented technology's impact on society.

2. Present evidence of research on your blog and the website you have created.

3. Create a list of the references you used for your research.

How you'll be assessed:

You need to post evidence of research on your blog and website for tutor assessment and peer review.

Note: exploring 'critical perspectives' gives you ideas about some of the issues in society that influence the production of our films, games and shows, and the kinds of story they tell. 'Contextual perspectives' puts the focus on these stories, and we're looking for evidence that you can understand and interpret how creative practitioners find narratives that reflect the concerns of audiences around the world.

Apply research to plan a short film sequence

What you have to do:

1. Plan a short film sequence, with a storyline linked to the research you have done, that can feature 'alien tech'.

2. Produce a storyboard and/or shot list setting out the shots for your filmed sequence.

Note: you are advised to include your 'alien tech' artefact in two shots only. The tracking and compositing is tricky!

How you'll be assessed:

You will post evidence of this task on your website. This will be viewed and feedback offered from your tutors and peers.

Task Four

Apply research to design and 3D model an example of 'alien tech'

What you have to do:

2. Use Maya to 3D-model your 'alien tech' artefact.

3. Document your process with screen grabs and evaluative and reflective blog posts.

How you'll be assessed:

You will post thorough evidence of each step of the task onto your website. This will be viewed and feedback offered from your tutors and peers.

Task Five

Produce a short film sequence

What you have to do:

1. Work in pairs or small groups to film the shots for your short live action sequence.

2. Document the process with production stills and evaluative and reflective blog posts.

How you'll be assessed:

You will post thorough evidence of the task onto your website for review from your tutors and peers.

Note: don't forget to think about audio!

Task six

Composite your rendered 3D asset into a short film sequence.

What you have to do:

1. Frame and animate your 'alien tech' device to match the live action shots you have filmed.

2. Export your 'alien tech' device from Maya and use After Effects to composite it into the scene.

3. Document your process through screen grabs and evaluative and reflective blog posts.

How you'll be assessed:

You will post thorough evidence of the task onto your website for review from your tutors and peers.

Task seven

Evaluate your finished short film clip.

What you have to do:

1. Produce a thorough evaluation (700w) that reflects on all the stages of the production process, including initial ideas, planning, skills development, production and post-production. You also need to reflect further on the effectiveness of the website as a way to present evidence.

How you'll be assessed:

The evaluation will be posted onto your website, where it will viewed by tutors and peers, and you will receive feedback.

These tasks have changed over time and I've lost track on what task is what.
