VFX Career Industry Research Task

Production coordinator

 

Job description: Production coordinators help ensure VFX projects run smoothly. Working under the production manager or producer, they help to arrange the day-to-day running of the team and make sure everyone has the information they need to work effectively. They organise the movement of the assets through the VFX pipeline. They are responsible for distributing the assets and artwork needed to the relevant departments. They relay supervisor or client briefs to artists and feedback to the relevant teams about the progress of the work. They keep production databases updated with the current status of shots and take detailed notes in meetings. They also track costs against the budget. Scheduling external meetings is also often a part of their job and they keep their client-side counterpart updated about the status of the project. Production coordinators need to communicate well with everyone. They liaise with production and post-production. It’s their job to help to keep everyone on target so the project is finished on time and on budget.

 

Qualifications needed: You can take A-levels or Highers in business studies, film studies, media studies, English, maths and economics. Or you might want to take the following Level 3 vocational qualifications: BTEC National Extended Diploma in Creative Digital Media Production

 

Skills and qualities required: Knowledge of VFX: understand the artistic and technical processes through which VFX is made, know the key roles and responsibilities of the team. Communication: work within a team towards a shared goal, be able to communicate clearly with all team members.

 

Salary: Average Base Pay £27,695/yr

VFX editor

 

Job description: VFX editors work as the link between the film or TV production team, which shoots the live-action footage, and the VFX studio that does the visual effects. A VFX editor can be employed by a VFX studio or directly by the film or TV production company. The role varies depending on whether they are in-house (employed by the studio) or client-side (employed by the film or TV production company).

 

Qualifications needed: If you want to go to university A-levels or Highers in computer science, maths, art and design, art, photography, graphic design or graphic communication would all equip you well for this role. Or you might want to take the following Level 3 vocational qualifications: BTEC National Diploma/Extended Diploma in Computing

 

Skills and qualities required: VFX editor must have excellent communication skills, as the job requires the VFX editor to communicate effectively between VFX staff and the editors. VFX editors pay very close attention to detail and scrutinize every shot in a production that is necessary.

 

Salary: Average Base Pay £32,506/yr

VFX producer

 

Job description: VFX producers manage the whole process of creating the VFX for film or TV. They make sure that the client, usually the film or TV series’ producer or director, is happy with what the VFX studio makes. VFX producers write the bid; the document through which they persuade the film or TV series’ producer to take their VFX studio on to do VFX work on a project. VFX producers put together the team of VFX artists and other technical staff. They set the schedules for the work and they manage the budget. While filming is happening, VFX producers work closely with the live-action production crew. They also work with the editor in post-production. They communicate between the crew and editor. How much they interact with the client varies between studios. They might report to them on a weekly or even daily basis.

 

Qualifications needed: If you want to go to college or university, A-levels or Highers in business studies, English, film studies, media studies, maths, physics, economics or modern foreign languages. Or you might want to take any of the following Level 3 vocational qualifications: BTEC National Extended Diploma in Creative Digital Media Production, BTEC National Diploma/Extended Diploma in Business, BTEC National Diploma/Extended Diploma in Enterprise and Entrepreneurship, OCR Technical Diploma/Extended Diploma in Business.



 

Skills and qualities required: Good leadership skills, Knowledge of VFX effects and skills, Understanding of 3D animation, Ability to work with a team, Good communication skills, Ability to stick to deadlines, Scheduling and Budgeting.

 

Salary: Average Base Pay £52,441/yr
